Multilateral Environmental Agreements

Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) play a critical role in the overall framework of environmental laws and conventions. MEAs form the over-arching international legal basis for global efforts to address particular environmental issues. Activities under the theme include developing a strategy paper on the inter linkages between biodiversity related MEAs; providing technical inputs into various processes associated with priority agreements/forums on linkages and synergies; developing a national action plan on synergistic implementation of national actions; and developing reporting and monitoring frame works on key agreements besides providing inputs into governance discussions.

Work Plan for 2015

A review of Implementation of International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) in light of the notification under section 40 of the BD Act and its impact on the implementation of the Act will be carried out; linkages between the BD Act and India’s obligations under selected MEAs will be examined, and a Policy Brief on how the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) may contribute to increased biodiversity conservation in India will be developed.
