Applications invited for India Biodiversity Awards 2018


India is one of the mega-diverse countries in the world and home to nearly eight percent of the world’s total recorded species of plants and animals. Across the country, people, communities and governments have played an outstanding and innovative role in conserving India’s rich heritage.

Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in association with UNDP India, therefore, started the India Biodiversity Awards in 2012 during India’s Presidency of the Eleventh Meeting of Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The second and third round of Awards were successfully conducted in partnership with the National Biodiversity Authority of India in 2014 and 2016.  
The National Biodiversity Authority takes great pleasure in hosting Fourth India Biodiversity Awards, 2018. UNDP India will serve as the knowledge partner for this round of Awards.
Applications are invited under the following categories:

1. CONSERVATION

Sub-categories

a. Conservation of wild species - (Download)

There will be two awards in this category – one each for the enterprise of individuals and institutions working for the conservation, management and restoration of wild species and their habitats
Eligibility criteria: Individuals and Institutions - working for the conservation of wild floral and faunal species, for the last 5 years shall be eligible to apply for this Award.

b. Conservation of domesticated species - (Download)

There will be two awards in this category – one each for the enterprise of individuals and institutions working for the conservation, management and restoration of domesticated species and their habitats.
Eligibility criteria: Individuals and Institutions - working for the conservation of domesticated floral and faunal species, for the last 5 years shall be eligible to apply for this Award.


2. SUSTAINABLE USE OF BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES - (Download)

There will be two awards in this category – one each for the enterprise of individuals and institutions intended to recognize their endeavours for sustainable use of biological resources and efficient natural resource management.
Eligibility criteria: Individuals and Institutions working for the sustainable use of biological resources for last 5 years shall be eligible for this award.


3. REPLICABLE MECHANISMS FOR ACCESS AND BENEFIT SHARING - (Download)

There will be one award in this category aimed at honouring individuals/ institutions whose projects augmented noteworthy monetary and non-monetary equitable sharing of benefits by communities and stakeholders concerned out of utilisation of biological resources.
Eligibility criteria: Individuals and Institutions - working on mechanisms/ models developed for successful implementation of Access and Benefit Sharing shall be eligible to apply for this award.


4. BEST BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE - (Download)

There will be one award in this category aimed at appreciating Biodiversity Management Committees for the exemplary work in documentation of biological resources and associated traditional knowledge; generating awareness; establishing best practices in biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, social and gender equity and empowerment and equitable sharing of benefits. The biological resources could be natural and/or those that include local traditional cultivars and animal breeds.
Eligibility criteria: Biodiversity Management Committees discharging the roles and responsibilities as envisaged under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and Rules, 2004, shall be nominated through the respective State Biodiversity Boards for this award.


Screening Process


An application template, available online, will have to be filled by applicants/facilitators, entailing relevant information. These applications will be scrutinized by the Jury and 12 best applications under each of the four categories will be long-listed on the basis of the evaluation criteria and the supporting documents (if any).

Validation and Selection Process

The long-listed applications (12 from each category) will then be sent a detailed template with specific questions, for a precise assessment of the respective conservation models. In each category, the top three applicants will be shortlisted on the basis of scores received after field validation. Finally, the Jury will select the winner in each category for the best conservation model.

Awarding Winners

The eight finalists will be awarded a cash prize, a memento, and a citation each at the India Biodiversity Awards ceremony to be held on 22 May, 2018.

Jury

A Jury comprising eminent experts on different aspects of biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, access and benefit sharing and biodiversity governance will guide the selection process for the Awards and select the winners.

How to Apply?

Applications for the India Biodiversity Awards may be submitted directly by the individual or institution; or with prior informed consent, by a supporting organization, or by any third party that is familiar with the activities and achievements of the applicant. Awards will be given to the individual or institution alone. Applications should preferably be submitted in English.
