Goa

The state of Goa is located geographically in the coastal region of India generally known as the konkan strip/ Malabar coast, which is an escarpment rising up to the Western Ghats range of mountains, which separate it from the Deccan plateau. Goa has a coastline of 105 kms and is rich in marine and coastal biodiversity. The most of the Goan population depends on agriculture & fisheries. Most of the forests in the State are located in the interior eastern region of the State. The eastern side comprises of Western Ghats which have been internationally recognised as one of the Biodiversity Hotspots of the world. More than 400 species of birds, 50 species of mammals, 23 species of Snakes and 04 species of bats, and over 3000 species of plants and flowering trees are recorded in Goa. The State is rich in Forest, which covers more than 1424 sq.km. The State animal of Goa is Gaur, the State bird is Ruby Throated Yellow Bulbul and State tree is the Matti (Terminalia elliptica). The main rivers that flows in Goa are Mondovi, Zuari, Terekhol, Chapora and the Sal River. The Zuari and Mondovi are the lifelines of Goa, with their tributaries draining 69% of its geographic area. Goa is the only state in India to protect the entire Western Ghats section within the State. Endemism is very high in this area. The State has a total of 06 Wildlife Sanctuaries and 01 National Park.
