Component 6: Increasing Public Awareness and education programmes


Activities:

  1. Develop local language materials comprising tools, methods, guidelines and frame works
  2. Develop communication outreach materials in respective local languages
  3. Organize exchange visits of selected BMCs and SBBs to improve the exchange of Information and sharing of experiences
Outputs:
1)
Prepared an inception booklet based on the outcome of the UNEP-GEF MoEF ABS Inception meeting held on 23rd-24th August, 2012.
2 )
A booklet on “Defining ABS terminology” was prepared and released during the African Conference. The terminology booklet contains details of the ABS related terms used in CBD text, Nagoya protocol and BD Act, 2002.

Project brochure has been prepared and circulated widely to disseminate information about the project.

Relevant literature has been collected from various sources viz. UNEP, CBD, TEEB, IUCN, OECD, SANDEE, Academic and Research Institutions etc., and a preliminary review was carried out. This information base includes:
  1. Biodiversity and Ecosystem in general - significance, threat, need for conservation,
  2. Economics of Biodiversity – Applications of economic principles and instruments in biodiversity management
  3. ABS – innovative incentive mechanism or financial option in biodiversity management
  4. Biodiversity valuation in different ecosystems: Forest, Agriculture and Wetland – valuation methodology or tools, database and limitations. All the above literatures were compiled in the form of CD and distributed widely to generate awareness on Economic Valuation in relation to ABS

Educational Standee – Prepared educational standees on Economic Value of Biodiversity, ABS, BD Act, BMC formation, PBR preparatory process etc and shared with all the SPUs.

Power Point Presentations - A set of PPTs on Economics and Biodiversity, ABS and case studies, BMC formation, preparation of PBRs and BD Act prepared and disseminated through the website to enhance capacity among the stakeholders.

A Resource Kit on “Economics: Access and Benefit Sharing” was compiled in the form of CD includes information on literature related to economic valuation of biodiversity, ABS Project, Economics of biodiversity and Power Point Presentations. This information kit is widely circulated during various national and international events.

Training Manual on Economic valuation - The training Manual includes information on the steps involved in valuation of Bio-resources. Bio-resources: Nature and Characteristics and Economic Potential, Market and Property Rights of Bio-resources, Economic Valuation of Bio-resources from Selected Ecosystems, Methods for Bio-resource Valuation, Value Addition for Bio-resources, Bio-resource Real Price Estimation etc.
